General Director of Environmental Operations, BNSF Railway Company
David Smat is the General Director of Environmental Operations for the BNSF Railway Company, headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a registered Professional Environmental Engineer in Georgia and Louisiana, with over 30 years of engineering experience in the transportation, pharmaceutical, pulp/paper and aerospace industries. He is a graduate of the University of Delaware (BE/EE) and Louisiana Tech University (MS/CE).
In David’s current role at BNSF, he is responsible for leading BNSF’s environmental operations including multi-media compliance programs; environmental sustainability; and environmental infrastructure engineering, construction and wastewater treatment operations across BNSF’s 32,500 route miles in 28 states and three Canadian provinces.
David’s former role includes the Global Head of Health, Safety and Environment, for Alcon, Inc. (a Novartis Company), also headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, where he was responsible for Alcon’s Global Health, Safety and Environmental strategy and compliance program implementation, encompassing 24 manufacturing facilities, 5 primary distribution centers, and affiliate operations spanning 75 countries; protecting the environment and the health and safety of Alcon’s 24,000 employees.
Originally a Chicago native, David currently resides in Fort Worth, TX, with his wife and four sons.
